Math and Executive Function Tutoring empowering students for a brighter future.
Julia’s Goals in Tutoring
My goal is to make Tutoring fun and safe, so the student is accessible to learning and wants to be successful. Working one on one, I try and accomplish a number of things: We usually start a session doing homework to see the student’s process, proficiency and efficiency, especially at the beginning of the relationship. It’s important to learn their basic skills, problem solving abilities, how the student reacts when they don’t know things, ability to persevere, stay focused, ask for help, and use their resources. I work hard to provide a safe and playful environment for learning. It is very important to me that teens learn to ask for help.

Tutoring Style
At this point, I have my own way of teaching. All teachers do. Simplified: I speak Teen. Sometimes my methods can be radically different than a particular teacher, but I find all complimentary. Through the span of my career, I have seen dozens of different curriculums and teaching styles, and I try and match what I think is best for the individual student’s learning style.
Executive Function Tutoring
Every couple of years I do workshops with Sarah Ward of Cognitive Connections. I consider her a guru of Executive Function skills. I have found in my work that most kids, not all, have some level of Executive Function issues. We’ve all needed to learn these skills: organization, time management, paper flow, forgetting things, being fully prepared for school, activities, etc… There are some students I do just Executive Function work with. I think it is a nice complimentary perk for all of my students.
